Your Games Are Disappearing. Even the Discs Won't Save Them.
A game can survive on a shelf and still become impossible to play. Preserving games means saving far more than the file.
A game can be sitting safely on your shelf and still be disappearing.
The disc may be spotless. The cartridge may still boot. But the day-one patch is gone. The music licence has expired. The authentication server is offline. The multiplayer population has moved on. What survives is technically the game—and yet not the game people actually remember playing.
That is the strange problem at the heart of video game preservation. We often talk about games as if they are objects, like books or films. They are not. They are stacks of software, hardware, services, contracts, communities, and business decisions. Losing any one layer can change the work or make it unplayable.
Saving the file is only the beginning.
There Is No Single “Original”
Games rarely stay fixed after release. They change.
Balance patches alter weapons and characters. Updates replace levels, remove licensed music, fix exploits, and introduce entirely new systems. Remasters rewrite assumptions about lighting, difficulty, controls, and performance. Sometimes a tiny bug fix erases a technique that an entire speedrunning or competitive community considered part of the real game.
So which version belongs in history?
The polished final build may look like the obvious answer. But it can flatten the record. The unstable launch version may be the one millions of people experienced. An unpopular patch may explain why a community disappeared. A brief event may contain the moment the culture changed.
A complete archive cannot preserve only the destination. It has to preserve the route.
The Box Does Not Contain the Whole Game
Modern games routinely depend on infrastructure that lives somewhere else.
Authentication, matchmaking, inventories, seasonal content, anti-cheat, leaderboards, cloud saves, and even basic progression can sit on a publisher's servers. When those servers shut down, the executable might remain perfectly intact while the experience is hollowed out.
This is most obvious in games built around other people. A lobby is not just a menu. A shared map is not just a level. A digital market is not just a feature. These are the places where the culture happened.
You can archive an empty stadium. That does not preserve the match.
The People Who Can Save It May Not Be Allowed To
Then there is the permission problem.
Music and vehicle licences expire. Middleware contracts restrict what can be released. Publishers merge, close, or lose track of old source code. Fan groups may have the technical ability to revive a server or repair a broken client, while having no clear legal right to distribute what they built.
That creates a bizarre gap. The people with the strongest incentive and ability to keep a game alive are often not the people who formally control it. The rights holder, meanwhile, may have little commercial reason to maintain a work that no longer makes money.
The game sits between capability and permission—and quietly disappears there.
Preserving the Context
Real preservation has to extend beyond binaries.
It means saving patches, manuals, storefront pages, development tools, patch notes, mods, interviews, forum posts, screenshots, videos, and player-made documentation. It means recording how controllers felt, how servers behaved, and why a particular version mattered at a particular moment.
These materials are not decoration around the “real” artifact. They are part of the evidence.
Games are playable systems, but they are also lived-in places. A future player might be able to launch the file and still have no idea why it mattered. If we want to preserve games as culture, we have to save the world around the code—not just the code itself.
